Bentley Copse Activity Centre is an Outdoor Activity Centre with over 15 adventurous activities and offers a range of accommodation for groups in its extensive forest woodlands and twenty-eight acres of natural Hurtwood forest in Surrey.

Currently the Activity Centre is looking for a new Centre Manager to manage the operations efficiently and effectively at the campsite. Responsibilities include overseeing the grounds, building and maintenance works, infrastructure management, apprenticeships and woodland management.

Primary Responsibilities

• Manage operations for Bentley Copse effectively and efficiently in its use as a Camp Site, Activity Centre and as the Centre of Adventure for Surrey Scouts - this will include responsibilities such as: overseeing grounds and building maintenance, infrastructure management, woodland management, etc.
• Manage bookings for camping, buildings, activities, and general site utilisation
• Liaise with and cater for the needs and aspirations of all users of our facilities at Bentley Copse
• Support users of Bentley Copse with their programme planning through the organisation of ceremonies i.e. Flag breaks, Scouts Owns and Campfires etc
• Manage the routine maintenance and support development for the future: of the site, fixed assets and other assets required to operate Bentley Copse (e.g. plant equipment, vehicles etc).
• Build, support and supervise teams of volunteers to support you in your role and to support the effective and efficient operation of Bentley Copse.
• Ensure development of, implementation of and adherence to health and safety policies, risk assessments and standard operating procedures, and ensuring that health and safety policies and assessments are regularly reviewed.
• Operate Safeguarding and Health and Safety systems and procedures as applicable to the facilities – including those contained within the policies of The Scout Association and Surrey Scouts, and in compliance with statutory regulations
• Ensure safe and effective activity operations, including staff training and qualifications, equipment maintenance, stowage, records etc.
• Ensure all paid or volunteer staff operating on site are suitably qualified and that any relevant inductions, such as health and safety, are being followed
• Communicate regularly and effectively with site staff through regular meeting and other appropriate communication channels  
• Understand and accept the Child Protection policies (Yellow Card) of The Scout Association and undertake any applicable training required.

Working Arrangements:

The primary base location will be:
• Bentley Copse Activity Centre, Hound House Road, Shere, Guildford, Surrey GU5 9JH
• The incumbent needs to be flexible in approach and accept that the working environment is dependent on the rate of usage of the centre – for example, it would be expected that, particularly during peak season, the Centre Manager will need to support their team of volunteers for arrivals of visitors on a Friday evening – and regular weekend work will be necessary
• Actual working hours will vary according to the site usage, and the season
• Hours of work will be annualised in order to allow additional hours to be worked during busy periods and fewer hours to be worked at quieter periods throughout the year


Essential Requirements:

• Demonstrable experience of operating similar camp sites and/or activity centres or several years’ experience in outdoor / activity centre management and/or senior activity instructing
• Demonstrable experience of implementing operational plans; such as:
      • Asset maintenance
      • Standard operating procedures
      • Health and safety policies, procedures and plans
• Demonstrable experience of developing risk assessments and implementing risk mitigation
• Demonstrable experience of working as part of teams, as well as leading teams
• Demonstrable experience of building, managing and developing both staff, apprentices and volunteers
• Demonstrable experience of being self-motivated and driven
• Demonstrable experience of managing logistics
• High level of IT competency with experience in using typical office applications and email
• Excellent communicator
• The post holder must have a valid driving licence
• The post holder must be willing to become a member of the Scout Association; which will require an Enhanced DBS check to be completed satisfactorily prior to Surrey Scouts offering an employment

Desirable Requirements :
•  Experience of developing strategic plans for camp sites and/or activity centres
•  Experience of securing funding to support the delivery of strategic plans
•  Experience of woodland management, event management,   
•  Experience of successful large funding applications
•  Instructor qualifications in adventurous activities such as climbing, archery e.g. SPA, ERCA etc
•  Experience of implementing, or managing 3rd party implementation of electronic administration systems, such as online bookings
•  Qualification in Outdoor Education or similar
•  Existing first aid qualification
