This is a live-aboard position on our large converted holiday barges in the Scottish Highlands. The Guide will be leading walks, bike rides (and possibly canoe trips) within the Great Glen and will at times work as Bosun, crewing one of the barges.

The work alternates regularly with 3 other crew, covering the Guide and Bosun positions aboard our two barges, making for a varied and interesting job. The guiding work involves leading groups of up to 12 guests on sections of the Great Glen way and other walks or cycles at various locations throughout the Great Glen.  On our Classic and similar cruises, we also offer canoeing and sailing which are led by either the Guide or the Skipper on Ros Crana. The Bosun works as the barge crew, assists with activities and pilots our 5m powerboat to collect and drop off the guests.  Both roles involve barge deck crew work, driving the barge in open water, assisting with activities as directed by the skipper, maintenance of vessel, machinery and equipment, as well as general hosting and cleaning duties.

Please click on the Apply Now button to send us your contact details and we will e-mail you our recruitment pack with the full job information and details of how to apply.

The successful applicant will have experience in leading small groups in an outdoor environment. This should include guiding walks and trail biking (and preferably open canoeing). Also essential is a passion for the outdoors and the ability to chat to guests and enhance their experience of our fabulous surroundings.

Powerboating, open canoeing and/or sailing skills would be a distinct advantage. Applicants should have a good level of practical skill and the ability to carry out a wide variety of straightforward maintenance tasks. Paddlesport, RYA or Mountain Leader qualifications will be an advantage.

Training will be given in all aspects of the work as required and the new crew member should have a good aptitude for learning new skills including the deckwork required to crew the barges. Caledonian Discovery is a recognised RYA training centre and any powerboat training can lead towards RYA Powerboat level 2.
