As a Registered Crisis Intervention Service and Residential Children's Home provider in Cumbria, Northumberland and South Scotland, we provide both short term placements of up to 17 weeks providing a staff ratio of 2:1 through to full residential care for children with EBD.

About the Role 

Ensure staff adhere to safety regulations currently laid down by the Adventure Activities Licensing Authority (AALA)
Work with the management teams to ensure standardisation of risk management procedures across the organisation and smooth transition between programs, equipment and supplies.

Train all Residential Support Workers in line with our outdoor policies and procedures and be a key driver for our outdoor culture and ethos. The OEC will also lead an all A Wilderness Way refresher courses as and when required and be responsible for accrediting or facilitating accreditation where appropriate.  
Supporting and coaching to our freelance instructors, ensuring they receive regular supervisions and appropriate induction to the organisation. 
Design and teach an Outdoor Education curriculum.

In conjunction with the Managing Director and Finance Controller, create and monitor the outdoor equipment budget.

Educate employees in risk management. Ensure proper certifications of staff for each trip out. Track and report on all Incidents and Accidents that happen each month to the Service Managers and Directors where appropriate. 

Be ultimately responsible for the overall outdoor equipment needs of the Company.  

Be responsible for training and testing all staff on the proper use of equipment.

Collating, managing and communicating insights and statistics on outdoor activities. 



Requirements of the Role

  • A background in instructing and teaching in the outdoors.
  • Champion the safety of our outdoor activities and compliance with our AALA licence and manage staff to ensure adherence to safety regulations at all times.
  • Driven to stay motivated to see tasks through to completion in a changing environment.
  • Passionate about what we do and the difference that our services make to looked after young people and drive a culture where everything we do is focused on the outcomes of young people in our care. 
  • Form relationships at all levels within the organisation and effectively communicate across functional lines.
  • Computer literacy required in Microsoft Office 365.
  • Strong attention to detail, follow-up and commitment to accuracy.
  • Possess the ability to work both alone and within a team.
  • Adherence to our core values and behaviours at all times.
  • You'll work in a combination of offices and the outdoors.
  • Full Driving Licence.
