Apprenticeships In The Outdoors Sector

In recent years the Outdoors Sector has seen a massive growth in the number of Apprenticeship Schemes available. Apprentices can earn a wage and work alongside experienced staff to gain vocational skills in parallel with a training programme that gives them key skills and the opportunity to work towards nationally recognised qualifications (NVQs, NGBs, etc.). Anyone living in England, over 16 and not in full-time education can apply.

Apprenticeships in the outdoors are available at two levels, and allow the learner to gain an outdoor-related competence qualification, underpinning knowledge qualification and a number of technical certificates. Skills Active publish a list of the NGB qualifications that can be included within an Apprenticeship programme.

Outdoor Apprenticeships can take between one and four years to complete depending on the level of Apprenticeship and the apprentices' ability. There is a minimum salary for apprentices; however, many apprentices earn significantly more. Employers may also provide apprentices with food and accommodation if the apprenticeship takes place at a residential Outdoor Centre.
